Synopsis
God Got Ill is an experimental feature by Shane Ryan, tackling the subject of school shooters, and how, unfortunately, there is no way to profile one. The film mixes real kids with actors, real stories from actors, and staged environments with real kids, making the journey of the film, and the end result, as unforeseeable as the next shooting.
Filming has been a very raw and organic process, with Ryan filming his subjects as he finds them, including observing the lead actress as she ages (she was 10 when the film started shooting and is now 16 years old) almost in a Boyhood type of filmmaking style, as we witness her rough transition into teen-hood.
In the meantime, Ryan used what he's shot thus far, to make a 21 minute movie called Paper Kids, changing the story a bit to focus on the topic of missing kids, and what might have led to their disappearances. Paper Kids had its World Premiere at the Deptford Cinema in London on May 29th, 2016 as part of the Proxy Act Festival. The film screened again in London on May 25th, 2018 at Premiere Cinemas with the Romford Film Festival as part of a Shane Ryan retrospective series, which featured 7 of Ryan's films. Out of 120 films shown at the festival, Ryan was nominated for Best Director with Paper Kids.
